Meet Guy! In 2019, he joined Aurubis Olen as a Deputy Prevention Advisor Health. With his background in occupational medicine, he plays a key role in promoting the (mental) health, ergonomics, and safety of his colleagues.

  • 53 years old
  • Deputy Prevention Advisor Health
  • Works at Aurubis Olen since August 2019
  • Can you give an example of a health initiative to which you have contributed?
The roll-out of the industrial measurement plan is something I am particularly proud of. The measurement plan focuses on exposure to harmful substances and how we reduce it. This has a direct impact on colleagues' health. We emphasise the importance of good hand hygiene, avoiding hand-mouth movements and quitting smoking. These are practical things, but they make a world of difference.

  • Do you notice an evolution in the safety culture at Aurubis?
Definitely! The safety culture has grown nicely. What I think is great is that colleagues now address each other spontaneously about safety more often. That fits perfectly with Aurubis' core values, such as caring for each other. Working with people is the core of my role. And together we work to achieve our goals: we go home healthy and we have a safe working environment where everyone feels good.

  • What motivates you to come to work every day?
The team and the pleasant work atmosphere make it enjoyable for me to come in. People work hard, but there’s also room for fun and good conversations. What I appreciate about Aurubis is the accessibility and the “Kempen” mentality. And of course, the social aspect of my role plays a big part as well.

  • What’s a memorable moment at Aurubis that stood out to you?
The launch of our working group ‘ça va’ is definitely such a special moment. A board member unveiled the logo and the meaning of ‘ça va?’ in the presence of the Olen colleagues and that was really a special moment for me. The working group is committed to work experience and a healthy work-life balance. Organising Safety Days at Aurubis is also a highlight. There, safety takes centre stage and workshops are organised. Colleagues experience for themselves how important safety is, e.g. by sitting in a truck and seeing what blind spots there are.

  • Who is Guy Vanhoof outside of work?
First and foremost, I’m a proud father of two children. I enjoy getting up early in the morning to take our dog for a walk. Additionally, I teach first aid courses at Rode Kruis, and that social aspect gives me a lot of satisfaction. I also coached football for many years, which was a great passion of mine.
